Suggestion

[change]

In my opinion, this page should look a bit more like the English Wiktionary main page (not that we're trying to copy them, but if their format works better, let's use it!). We should definitely include links to wiktionaries in other languages (the biggest ones, probably), and I really like their use of a little color, quick index (which still has limited usability with us, I recognize, though in the near future it will be quite useful, hopefully), selected entries, and "things to do." That last one has a similar function to the Community Portal, so maybe we don't really need it, though having something that says up front that it is for beginners to start helping could be useful. Happy editing! --Cromwellt|talk 21:47, 6 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

This is all good stuff, now somone just has to do it! Remember, no pages have been protected here yet, so you are free to edit it. Gerard Foley 00:27, 17 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
I think the layout is ok, but IMAO the page should have prominent links to main parts of the site – like the Community Portal and Request a Definition - and have a simple entry on how to add a new word and link to that too. I tried wikipedia's formatting on the page User:H2g2bob/sandbox but I really don't think it works. However, as Cromwellt said, Wiktionary's layout is good. Adding "Browse Wiktionary" would be good to have, but means we'll have to sort out a categorisation system – which will need a bit of thought if it's to work well. The Quick Index would be relatively easy to add, and would be useful on the front page. H2g2bob 01:43, 17 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Actually I'd just like to add that if you do edit the page, then go for it - be bold and do what you think will work best. --h2g2bob
Note that en.Wiktionary's main page is being redesigned at en:Talk:Main Page/Redesign Gerard Foley 02:04, 17 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
H2g2bob, your page looks good. I think you should go for it! Gerard Foley 02:06, 17 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Good-looking main page, H2g2bob, but don't forget links to Wiktionaries in other languages. I'm with Gerard: go for it! --Cromwellt|talk 21:39, 17 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've added the other languages (copied from english wikipedia). --H2g2bob 18:15, 18 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

WotD

[change]

Flcelloguy, I like the idea of a word of the day, and I like it appearing on the main page, but maybe it would be better as a "word of the moment" (since moment is an indeterminate period of time) so that we don't necessarily have to keep it going every day. If you want to maintain it, I don't have anything against having a new one every day, just thinking of making it easier on you. I'll help out when I can, and I'll try to keep cranking out good words/definitions for you to use for WotD. :D --Cromwellt|talk 21:09, 21 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think the way it's implimented it is tricky to do this for time periods other than a day - but it would be fairly easy loop it round if we get stuck for words, for example by having the word for the 25th February displayed on the 25th March, April, etc. As it is, it would force us to add new words ;) --H2g2bob 22:26, 21 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

WotD will be updated automatically. If you create 100 word of the day entries today, it will update itself for the next 100 days! Gerard Foley 22:55, 21 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I already had the idea that it was updated automatically (though thanks for the clarification), but that still means we will have to keep the stack loaded unless we do what H2g2bob mentioned. But as you pointed out, it can be done in large groups all at one time, so I guess it isn't really a big deal. --Cromwellt|talk 04:28, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

en.wiktionary

Someone just spammed an entry on en.wikt: that might be helpful here, I don't know:

Help!

[change]

I added a picture to current WotD, but then noticed that it made the WotD cover the whole top of the mainpage. Obviously that template for adding pictures needs a little tweaking. Then I removed it, but it only took away the pic and didn't fix the with of the WotD. I don't know how to fix it completely. Maybe editing a previous version of the page would fix it. Someone please help. --Cromwellt|talk 23:36, 19 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Weirdness: it is fixed now. I guess the server took a little while catching up. --Cromwellt|talk 01:16, 20 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Title

[change]

Why is it "a wiki-based Open Content dictionary written in Simple English for easy reading" when that is not in simple English? English Wikitionary has a simpler one. So people looking for some thing simple will not explore. This unsigned comment was added by 68.239.230.5 (talk • contribs) 18 Apr 2006.

We have actually discussed that (on Wiktionary:Simple talk), and we are working on it. I haven't discovered how to change it yet, so I can't do it myself. If you know how, do it, or let me know, and I'll do it. --Cromwellt|talk 23:56, 24 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I wonder if Simple English Wikipedia and Simple English Wiktionary should be combined. When your words are very limited, it's very hard to give a short and simple definition of just one word.--HSTutorials 22:50, 30 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I strongly disagree. Sure, it isn't as easy when you are limited, but you can do it. You don't even have to stick only to the BE850. We just try to keep it as simple as possible, and use the BE850 and/or BE1500 as a general guideline. But seriously, you can define anything in simple terms if you try hard enough. Besides, definitions are not encyclopedic. I think this should definitely remain a separate project. --Cromwellt|talk|contribs 23:39, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Logo Discussion

[change]

Greetings,

I apologise for writing in English. There is a discussion about the logo for Wiktionary at meta:Wiktionary/logo. Please go there and help us decide. Please also put this message on your community page.

Thank you. -Dbmag9

Thanks for the heads-up, Dbmag9. --Cromwellt|talk|contribs 20:36, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Interwikis

[change]

I copied the interwikis from the Esperanto Wiktionary. OK, I see there are links at the bottom of the page, but people are used to looking for interwikis at the side. --Coppertwig 16:38, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

IPA

[change]

The IPA pronunciation on the Wiktionary logo is ['wık.ʃən.ri]. Wouldn't the appropriate pronunciation be ['wık.ʃən.æ.ɹi]? Ionas (Talk) 05:04, 24 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

The pronunciation is obviously wrong. The logo was supposed to be replaced a long time ago. There was a vote and various things happened over at en.wiktionary but in the end nothing substantive seems to have resulted from all of it. As far as I'm concerned, feel free to go in an change it yourself if you've got the means to do so.--Brett 11:32, 24 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
That isn't the only thing that needs to be changed on our logo. We talked about that before (I think it's in the archives of this page), how it should actually be under "S", not under "W", etc. I haven't figured out how to fix it, so if someone else knows how, please do. --Cromwellt|talk|contribs 00:58, 26 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Oops! I didn't notice which page I was commenting on. Should be in the archives of Simple talk. --Cromwellt|talk|contribs 01:01, 26 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
I cannot change it. I have only MS paint. Ionas (Talk) 15:11, 30 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Definitely, someone should. It is very annoying for a linguistics and phonetics expert like me to ignore. I am on Wikipedia Review. Ionas (Talk) 02:38, 4 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Make definitions for the most-linked to words" Shouldn't this be "Make definitions for the most linked-to words?" 74.75.15.247 15:25, 16 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've changed it to most-linked-to words.--Brett 15:32, 16 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

The text that says "We reached the 12,000-word mark on October 27, 2009!" shouldn't be colored blue, as users may confuse it as a link. Logan (talk) 22:03, 3 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

The blue looks nice on the main page. Any idea which other colour would look fine as well? --Barras (talk) 14:24, 4 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
I agree, blue looks good on the front page, and that it could be confused for a link probably isn't a big issue. Perhaps we could try crimson/dark red? That would work well too. Tempodivalse [talk] 17:19, 4 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
I changed it per your suggestion to crimson. Looks fine to me. In the case someone disagree, you know where the undo button is ;) --Barras (talk) 17:34, 4 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Now it looks like a dead link :-). Logan (talk) 23:39, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Is there a page that includes our milestones? I figure it actually could be a link if we had one. Cheers, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 14:44, 22 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

'To find a word, type it into the "search" box to the left', surely you mean 'right', as the search box is in the top right hand corner. This unsigned comment was added by 118.172.208.74 (talk • contribs) .

Fixed. Thanks for pointing that out!EdoDodo (talk) 11:26, 7 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Doesn't that actually depend on which skin you have loaded? The search box in monobook is to the left, I think, and it's in different places according to the other skins. Maybe we should note where it is for each skin. Thor Malmjursson IPA: θɔr mɑmjərsən talk to me 13:49, 12 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I just tried a few things and failed, just like the rest of you. We might as well just remove it for now?  Hazard-SJ  ✈  01:10, 19 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
I have removed it as there isn't support for checking the protocol the user is reading from within the software itself. We might add it in later on when such functionality is available. --Hydriz (talk) 10:23, 27 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
