  1. In general use, a pedophile is an adult who is sexually attracted to or commits sexual acts against a child under the legal age for sexual activity for sex or the legal age of adulthood.

Usage notes[change]

  • Although in general use pedophilia means any adult sexual attraction to or sexual act against any minor below the legal age of adulthood or the legal age for sexual activity, in psychiatry it means more specifically an adult with a mental disorder characterized by his being sexually attracted mostly or only to prepubescent children.
