Hello, Peterdownunder, and welcome to the Simple English Wiktionary!
We hope you are happy editing here. Some helpful pages to begin with are Wiktionary:Community Portal, Wiktionary:Useful, Help:Contents, Wiktionary:Rules, and Wiktionary:How to edit.
If you want to talk with other members or ask a question, you can visit Wiktionary:Simple talk. Administrators can also help you with more difficult problems. You can also ask me for help. The best way to do that is to leave a message on my talk page. Just remember to sign your messages on talk pages by typing "~~~~" (four tildes) at the end of your words.
Good luck and happy editing!--Brett 11:31, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
What to include
[change]Hi,
When you write a page, you only define the headword that has the title of that page. So for admire, you don't include admirable and admirer. They would each get their own page.--Brett 15:15, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
Sentence style
[change]While the general defining style here is to use sentences, using means as the main verb in the sentence defeats the purpose. The idea is to show how the word is used, and means doesn't achieve that. Taking the example of overboard, the most common verb with overboard is go, so rather than says Overboard means..., it's more instructive to say, If someone goes overboard....--Brett (talk) 13:54, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for that, I thought it sounded weak. I shall review my changes and make improvements. --Peterdownunder (talk) 20:29, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
yo
[change]I noticed you improve every new definition I create which is good but I also notice you hardly create pages yourself. How come?--96.51.38.246 (talk) 09:30, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
- It depends on how much time I have, but about half my edits would be new pages. It is hard to write a good new page, and does take a bit of thought. Making small improvements is usually quick and easy, such as fixing the format, or adding a picture, or adding adding missing page elements. I usually check most new entries to see if there is anything I can improve. How about signing up for a free account and user name?--Peterdownunder (talk) 21:19, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
- I see, creating something out of nothing takes a bit of intelligence in the creative department which not everyone has. I get that. I suck more with formatting and the boring stuff so it's good to have different skills that complement each other. It's what a collective wiki project is all about.
- I don't like usernames. I prefer anonymity.--96.51.38.246 (talk) 23:03, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
- Although with your IP address showing, you are less anonymous. --Peterdownunder (talk) 12:01, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
- My IP is dynamic so it changes all the time but not often enough which is why I don't edit much. If I had my way, wikipedia wouldn't be so uptight and aggressive with its anti-proxy policy but I understand the justification with all the tards out there. My proxies actually work on simple wiktionary but I don't see the point as a dictionary project is largely neutral.--96.51.38.246 (talk) 16:58, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

- Editing truly anonymously was difficult and more trouble than it was worth, that's all I remember. In fact, I remember my real IP being blocked because I volunteered as a proxy node.--96.51.38.246 (talk) 08:28, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

Btw I noticed you created like 50 new pages recently. I guess I should keep my observations to myself, lol.--96.51.38.246 (talk) 06:18, 19 April 2013 (UTC)
- You made me feel guilty. And I remembered I still had a backlog of links here.--Peterdownunder (talk) 10:08, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
