Examples[change]

Hey, it's nice to see somebody adding useful and natural examples. Are you mining them from somewhere or composing them?--Brett (talk) 12:16, 19 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi there. I'm composing them, but I'm letting myself be inspired by collocate lists extracted from a corpus. For instance, the examples I added recently to admit (sense 2), I saw from my corpus that the most frequently occurring types of institutions you can be admitted to are hospital, nursing home and school. So I sat down and thought of how I could use those collocations in a sentence. In this particular case (admit sense 2), the first two sentences are completely made up and the third one (the one about kids getting admitted to state schools) is an edited version of a sentence I did actually find in the corpus.
If the reason you're asking is to make sure I'm not copying and pasting sentences wholesale from somewhere, rest assured I'm not doing that ;-) MichMech (talk) 19:14, 19 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
No worries about that. Individual sentences should be covered under fair use/dealing. I was just curious how you were coming up with such natural sentences. I use the Corpus of Current American English a lot, but I don't think anybody else here takes a corpus approach.--Brett (talk) 00:17, 20 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
