  1. You use not only at the beginning of a phrase to say that something else was involved.
    We saw not only this country but all of Europe as well.
    She not only had never had a salad, but had never even heard of one.
    Not only was he nice, but he was also helpful.

  • When it comes at the beginning of a clause, it must be followed by an auxiliary verb + the subject if there is one.
