1. If ${\displaystyle x}$ is downstream from ${\displaystyle y}$, ${\displaystyle x}$ and ${\displaystyle y}$ are on or beside a river and the water moves from ${\displaystyle y}$ to ${\displaystyle x}$.
London is downstream from Oxford on the River Thames.
He stood on the bridge dropping leaves into the water and watching them float downstream.
