Can we use simpler words than 'participle' and 'tense'?

It's a reasonable question. We discussed it about 10 years ago when there were only a few hundred entries. The decision was that there is no real synonym, and it's such a key part of the dictionary, that any user who didn't know and wanted to would probably take the time to look it up.
