Français : Ce trône, destiné au Sénat, est inspiré d'un siège de marbre d'époque romaine, dénommé « trône d'une prêtresse de Cérès » : arrivé en France en 1796, il séduit David qui en réalise une belle étude. Le siège est orné de broderies au fil d'or où l'on retrouve l'abeille, symbole impérial, ainsi que le chiffre de l'Empereur sur le dossier. Les accoudoirs représentent deux sphinges ailées. Un dais, soutenu par six Victoires en plâtre doré, surmontait ce trône. Cet ensemble provient de la Galerie du Trone aménagée au Palais du Luxembourg sous Napoléon III, actuelle salle des Conférences du Sénat.
English: This throne intended for the Senate is based on a marble seat from the Roman period called « the throne of a priestess of Ceres », which arrived in France in 1796. David found the piece very beautiful and made a lovely sketch of it. The seat is adorned with gold-thread embroidery featuring a bee, the imperial emblem, and the emperor's monogram on the backrest. The elbow-rests depict a pair of winged sphinxes. A canopy supported by six gilt plaster Victories surmonted the chair. It comes from the Throne Gallery built in the Luxembourg Palace during Napoleon III's reign. Today, it is in the Senate conference room. |
