- (uncountable) A disease caused by a virus that causes encephalitis in warm-blooded animals and people. The virus is found in the saliva of infected animals and is usually passed on by a bite. An infected person or animal shows behaviors like excitement, aggressiveness, and dementia, followed by paralysis and then death. A vaccination after being bitten can prevent symptoms from developing.
